- The 2026 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine was awarded today to Karl Deisseroth, Peter Hegemann and Georg Nagel for discovering light-gated ion channels, the basis of optogenetics, which lets researchers switch individual brain cells on and off with light. ↗
- NASA astronaut Jessica Watkins commanded SpaceX's Crew-13 to the International Space Station on October 1 aboard Dragon Grace, becoming the first active NASA astronaut to fly twice on a Dragon spacecraft, for a planned six-month stay. ↗

- Google released Gemini 4 Argon on September 30 in a limited rollout to vetted cybersecurity teams, with the model beating GPT-6 Astra and Claude Opus 5.5 on 13 of 19 of Google's own benchmarks and posting a 15% hallucination rate versus Astra's 51%. ↗
- OpenAI unveiled GPT-6.1 Sol at its September 29 DevDay, pricing it at roughly a fifth of GPT-6 Astra's tokens while cutting its factual-error rate from 11.4% to 7.7%, days after reports it had shelved a more capable Astra successor over its own safety-test results. ↗

- The FDA approved AbbVie's Juvmo (tavapadon) on September 28 as the first selective D1/D5 receptor agonist for adult Parkinson's disease, taken once daily with or without levodopa. ↗
- A multinational study presented at EADV 2026 found nail detachment in 39% of 575 GLP-1 users versus 9% of 1,329 matched non-users, the first controlled look at the drugs' effect on nail health. ↗
