The world
- Russia told the World Health Organization on October 6 that no case of plague has been recorded in Irkutsk, with Rospotrebnadzor now attributing lab worker Darya Shipilova's October 2 death to "pneumonia of unknown etiology" that first presented as a respiratory infection — a reversal of the plague diagnosis Russian media had reported days earlier. ↗
- Brent crude jumped roughly 5% to about $105 a barrel Thursday on reports the U.S. is weighing large-scale military operations against Iran in the coming weeks, even as a tanker off Qatar's coast was struck by multiple projectiles and Iran and Oman separately announced an agreement on safe transit routes through the Strait of Hormuz. ↗
Business / macro & markets
- The Bureau of Labor Statistics' September jobs report, released Friday, showed nonfarm payrolls grew by just 29,000 and the unemployment rate ticked up to 4.2% from 4.1%, with July and August job growth revised down a combined 60,000 workers. ↗
Bitcoin & crypto
- Bitcoin was trading around $82,357 Thursday morning, down further from the sub-$84,000 level it fell to Wednesday as the Hormuz-driven oil spike helped trigger roughly $550 million in leveraged crypto liquidations. ↗
Technology
- Federal prosecutors in Los Angeles arrested Greg Lui, owner of Earthmade Computer, on October 1 on charges of smuggling more than $300 million worth of Nvidia AI chips to China through Malaysia and Singapore using falsified export paperwork, following a September 29 indictment. ↗
Science
- The 2026 Nobel Prize in Physics went to Francis Halzen, an 82-year-old University of Wisconsin–Madison physicist, for building the IceCube Neutrino Observatory — a cubic kilometer of Antarctic ice rigged with light sensors that caught the first high-energy neutrinos from outside the Milky Way. ↗
Arts & culture
- The 70th BFI London Film Festival opened October 7 at the Royal Festival Hall with the European premiere of Simon Stone's "Elsinore," starring Andrew Scott and Olivia Colman, kicking off eleven days of 251 features, shorts and immersive works from 88 countries, including nine VR/AI/gaming projects in the festival's "LFF Expanded" strand. ↗
