- The 2026 Nobel Peace Prize went to Navi Pillay, the South African jurist and former UN human rights chief, announced October 9 in Oslo for decades of work holding perpetrators of war crimes, crimes against humanity and genocide accountable. ↗
- Tanker attacks in the Strait of Hormuz hit a wartime high in the week ending October 4 — eleven vessels struck, per IMO data, the most since the war began in February — even as oil flows through the strait partially rebounded to somewhere between 8.5 and 10.3 million barrels a day depending on the tracker, still 23 to 40 percent below prewar levels. ↗
